About the Artwork
The Story: This captivating landscape photograph features the weathered remains of an ancient Phoenician-era ruin resting on a tiny island within the coastal marshlands of the Vendicari Nature Reserve in Sicily. A diverse community of native shorebirds has completely reclaimed the stone monument, with a solitary Greater Flamingo captured low to the ground just as it touches down beside the structure. As a wildlife nature conservation photographer, documenting these resilient species nesting and roosting on centuries-old archaeological structures highlights the unique ways European wildlife intertwines with human history inside Italy's protected wetland sanctuaries. The Technique: Captured on location using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens, carefully maneuvering the heavy telephoto barrel within the restrictive cuts of a fixed wetland blind to lock a sharp focus on the textures of the stone building while letting the surrounding birds draw the viewer's eye deeper into the frame.
