About the Artwork
The Story: This serene wildlife photograph captures an intimate grouping of nine Greater Flamingos wading together in the chilly waters of the Saline di Priolo Nature Reserve in Sicily. Seven members of the flock are tucked into a peaceful sleep on a single leg—a vital thermal behavior that reduces body heat loss to the freezing wetland—while two alert birds in the foreground hold their long necks in elegant, partially curled S-curves. As a wildlife nature conservation photographer, designing an entire Mediterranean expedition around capturing these sculptural waders provides a powerful visual testament to the success of regional sanctuary protections on the island. The Technique: Captured from a stationary position using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens mounted on a stable tripod, tracking the birds through a fixed blind to preserve the crisp textures of their pale pink feathers against the calm, cold marsh water.
