The Story: This captivating wildlife photograph isolates a solitary Greater Flamingo right as it begins to stir and uncurl from a deep rest at the Saline di Priolo Nature Reserve in Sicily. Supported by 19 highly specialized, elongated cervical vertebrae, these magnificent birds possess the unique ability to stretch their necks up to 20 inches high or coil them completely backward into a tight S-shape to sleep safely.
