About the Artwork
The Story: This dramatic landscape photograph captures the intense, quiet atmospheric shift on the Great Salt Lake just before a storm. Hiking across the shore of Fremont Island, I watched soft sunrise light wash across the distant sky while threatening rain clouds rolled in and the winds began to pick up. As a wildlife conservation photographer, capturing these moments of raw elemental power highlights the vast, wild beauty of Utah's inland sea and the importance of preserving its fragile ecosystem. The Technique: Captured handheld on location while hiking up rugged island terrain using a high-resolution Nikon D780 camera and a 28-300mm Nikkor zoom lens. To combat the rising winds and rapidly changing mountain light, I utilized a fast shutter speed to keep the composition tack-sharp, beautifully balancing the faint golden sunrise glow against the deep, heavy textures of the incoming storm clouds.
