About the Artwork
The Story: This tranquil wildlife photograph captures a clean, linear row of five Greater Flamingos awakening from an afternoon nap, their pale pink bodies casting soft, mirrored reflections into the still waters of the Saline di Priolo Nature Reserve in Sicily. Formally established in December of 2000, this delicate wetland oasis has been meticulously protected since 2001 by Lipu—the Italian League for the Protection of Birds—becoming the only active nesting and breeding sanctuary for flamingos on the island after the historic hatching of its first documented chicks in 2015. As a wildlife nature conservation photographer, documenting these peaceful birds resting within a safe haven underscores the immense importance of intensive habitat restoration in protecting the Mediterranean's fragile migratory pathways. The Technique: Captured on an afternoon shoot using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens, carefully anchoring the heavy telephoto barrel through the restrictive horizontal viewing slots of a permanent wetland blind to freeze the fine feather details and glass-like water reflections.
