Costa Rica Photography Print | Crested Guan (Penelope purpurascens)
About the Artwork
The Story: This atmospheric wildlife photograph captures a large Crested Guan moving methodically through the canopy branches to forage on wild tree berries during an intense tropical storm. Seeking refuge beneath a covered patio at the Arenal Observatory Lodge near the base of the volcano, I documented the arboreal bird with its dark feathers noticeably slick and drenched from the heavy rainfall. Experiencing downpours on seven out of ten days during a March trek highlighted a staggering geographical contrast for a photographer based in Utah, where the desert landscapes receive just 10 inches of annual precipitation compared to this hyper-humid rainforest ecosystem that absorbs a massive 19 feet of rain each year. Read the full behavioral guide and travel narrative on my website in the [Wildlife Photography in Costa Rica: Art, Ethics & Adventure] blog post.
The Technique: Captured from a sheltered patio using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens mounted on a stable tripod with a fluid gimbal head, using a fast shutter speed to freeze the falling sheets of rain while locking absolute focus onto the wet, glistening textures of the bird's plumage.
