Costa Rica Photography Print | Boat-billed Heron (Cochlearius cochlearius)
About the Artwork
The Story: This extraordinary wildlife photograph captures a rare, intimate encounter with a nocturnal Boat-billed Heron sitting safely atop her nest, woven deeply within a thick tangle of protective branches and lush greenery. Hidden inside a secluded wetland canopy near the iconic Arenal Volcano region, the unique wading bird guards her tiny, newly hatched chick as it peers up at its parent with striking, prehistoric features reminiscent of the dinosaur era. As a wildlife nature conservation photographer, documenting these secretive, scoop-billed hunters during their critical nesting cycles highlights the incredible ecological richness of Costa Rica's protected freshwater marshlands and volcanic river basins. Read the full behavioral guide and travel narrative on my website in the [Wildlife Photography in Costa Rica: Art, Ethics & Adventure] blog post.
The Technique: Captured from a stationary position using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens mounted on a stable tripod, utilizing precise optical tracking to slice through the dense forest layers and lock sharp focus on the expressions of the heron and her chick.
