The Story: This dynamic wildlife photograph captures a secluded grouping of eight Greater Flamingos contending with a rising Mediterranean breeze that whips through the Saline di Priolo Nature Reserve in Sicily. Reaching this protected sanctuary required a trek down a dirt road and climbing carefully through dense, overhanging tree branches to access a series of camouflaged blinds where eight flamingos stood in a grouping, two flamingos appear locked in an active discussion, while a third takes flight. As an ethical wildlife nature conservation photographer, utilizing these restrictive structural blinds ensures the nesting birds remain undisturbed by human activity, successfully preventing them from spooking and permanently abandoning their fragile eggs. The Technique: Captured from a low-profile position inside a permanent blind using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens, using a fast shutter speed to sharply preserve the ruffled textures of the wind-blown feathers and freeze the rapid wing beats of the departing bird.
