Costa Rica Photography Print | Bats, Chiroptera, Costa Rica
About the Artwork
The Story: This striking wildlife photograph captures the remarkable, elongated tongue of a native nectar-feeding bat as it approaches a tropical flower deep within the darkness of the Costa Rican forest. Taken while traveling with an aggressive commercial tour group, this image documents a controversial setup where artificial flash units and sugar-water injections were used to forcefully bait the mammals out of the canopy. As an ethical wildlife nature conservation photographer, sharing this image serves as a vital, transparent conversation piece to expose the hidden pressures of modern eco-tourism, prompting deep reflection on the boundary between responsible documentation and intrusive field practices. Read the full ethical commentary and travel narrative on my website in the [Wildlife Photography in Costa Rica: Art, Ethics & Adventure] blog post.
The Technique: Captured on location using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens mounted on a stable tripod, utilizing a precise exposure to balance the sudden burst of the tour group's artificial flash array to freeze the rapid motion of the bat's extended tongue.
