Joshua Tree National Park, Cholla Flower
Don’t get too close to smell this delicate flower of the Cholla Cactus while visiting Joshua Tree National Park, that is unless you have tweezers to pull out the thorns who will grab onto anything near.
Teddy Bear Cholla Cactus, makes me think of cuddly toys, so I’m not certain why this name was chosen for this gorgeous, stunning cactus, but the oxymoron certainly had me thinking. This cactus will grow to about 3 - 7 feet, and sometimes 13 feet tall. Ponder the full garden all in bloom with pink flowers as you are visiting Joshua Tree National Park.
I arrived in May, and the flowers bloom from April - June, but apparently I missed the vibrant floral month. However, I was taken in by the soft, ethereal feel of these delicate flowers who somehow manage to grow in a thorny home. For this shot, and others of the plants, I used my macro lens, so I could get close, but not too close to get the thorns on me.
