About the Artwork
The Story: This powerful black and white landscape photograph captures the stark, deeply wrinkled badlands and dramatic sediment ridges sweeping across Zabriskie Point in Death Valley National Park. Fighting a fierce, unforgiving desert gale that made setting up a tripod entirely impossible, I braced my body against the wind to preserve this raw, otherworldly view of California's high desert. As a conservation-minded nature photographer, translating these intensely arid, eroded formations into a monochromatic format emphasizes the ancient geological pressures and fragile desert terrains protected within America's hottest national park. The Technique: Captured handheld under severe desert wind conditions using a high-resolution Nikon D780 camera and a 28-300mm Nikkor zoom lens. To combat the intense movement of the gale while pulling out the striking textures of the terrain, I utilized an ultra-fast shutter speed to eliminate camera shake, converting the harsh midday shadows into a rich, silver-toned monochrome composition.
