Frozen Yellow Yarrow Botanical Print | Islands
About the Artwork
The Story: The unique, flattened clusters of yarrow take on an entirely new architectural form when locked in ice. For this studio study created in Utah, I fully immersed a vibrant stem of yellow Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) in water and froze it solid for 24 hours. The freezing process isolated the dense clusters of tiny blossoms into distinct, independent sections beneath the surface. This fine art photograph documents that fascinating separation, making the textured bursts of golden yellow appear like small, luminous islands floating within a vast, crystalline sea.
The Technique: Shot inside my studio using a high-resolution Nikon camera and a specialized macro lens, this digital photograph is an intimate exploration of repeating patterns. The close-up composition highlights the tight, umbrella-like structure of the tiny individual florets, using controlled light to trace the delicate frost pathways weaving around the yellow botanical shapes.
