About the Artwork
The Story: This exhilarating wildlife photograph captures a Western Grebe sprinting at high speed completely upright across the water's surface at the Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area. While this incredible "rushing" behavior is famous during spring mating rituals, this unique frame was documented in October as the birds repeatedly raced individually and in pairs to aggressively build up muscle and wing strength before their massive winter migration. As a wildlife conservation photographer, capturing these intense seasonal training sprints highlights the critical, high-energy biological preparation that takes place across the Great Salt Lake's open waters. The Technique: Captured while lying prone on a ground covering beneath a hidden camouflage sheet blind, utilizing a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens poking through the fabric on a splayed tripod with a fluid gimbal head. I used an ultra-fast shutter speed to eliminate any motion blur, cleanly freezing the rapid, churning splash of the water and the powerful stride of the running grebe.
