The Story: This heartwarming wildlife photograph captures a tender moment at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, featuring an adult Western Grebe swimming along a peaceful waterway with an adorable "grebette" chick hitching a ride on its back. Photographed quietly from my vehicle window to ensure the parent remained completely undisturbed, this frame represents the fulfillment of a long-term photography milestone to document this intimate parenting behavior. As a wildlife conservation photographer, capturing these vulnerable, successful rearing cycles emphasizes how critical it is to protect undisturbed, healthy freshwater channels flowing into the Great Salt Lake system. The Technique: Captured from inside a vehicle blind using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens resting steadily on the window frame. This approach allowed me to achieve a sharp focus on the fine downy feathers of the chick and the striking red eye of the parent, utilizing a smooth exposure that isolates the floating family against a soft, non-distracting aquatic backdrop.
