Great Salt Lake Utah Wildlife Print | Virginia Rail, Morning Reflection
About the Artwork
The Story: This rare and intimate wildlife photograph captures a highly elusive Virginia Rail stepping out from the marsh reeds into the calm, wetland region of Antelope Island during the early morning hours. Because these small marsh birds are notoriously secretive and spend their lives completely hidden from view, capturing this clear profile and soft morning reflection required sitting completely motionless on the ground for a prolonged period. As a wildlife conservation photographer, documenting these secretive species underscores the vital importance of protecting undisturbed, dense shoreline wetlands surrounding the Great Salt Lake where these unique rails feed and nest. Explore this and other conservation-focused bird images across my online [Shop Bird of a Feather].
The Technique: Captured from a low, seated position on the ground using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens mounted on a stable tripod with the use of a gimbal head. I utilized a wide aperture to beautifully blur out the background reeds into a smooth, painterly canvas, while employing a fast shutter speed to perfectly freeze the intricate patterns of the rail's plumage and its delicate mirror reflection.
