The Story: This high-energy wildlife photograph captures a massive flock of Northern Shovelers exploding into flight off the shores of Antelope Island, spraying a dramatic mayhem of mud and water everywhere. The sudden eruption occurred as the ducks scrambled to escape an approaching bald eagle that was actively hunting overhead for an early morning meal. The Technique: Captured using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens mounted on a stable tripod, utilizing a smooth fluid gimbal head to instantly track the sudden movement and an ultra-fast shutter speed to freeze the explosive splashing water and fleeing ducks in sharp detail.
