Great Salt Lake Utah Photography Print | Sandhill Crane, Shake it Out
About the Artwork
The Story: This captivating wildlife photograph captures a magnificent Sandhill Crane pausing on the mudflats of Farmington Bay WMA to dynamically shake out its beautiful plumage. Standing quietly at my original vantage point while the crane kept a watchful eye on a companion in the distance, I froze this burst of natural movement that beautifully fluffed and separated each individual feather. As a wildlife conservation photographer, documenting these active behavior patterns highlights the vital importance of protecting undisturbed shoreline wetlands around the Great Salt Lake where these large, ancient birds gather to forage and breed. Explore this and other conservation-focused bird images across my online [Shop Birds of a Feather]—and feel free to inquire about the large oil painting I created from this exact frame!
The Technique: Captured without a tripod by quietly leaning my shoulder against a telephone pole to brace my body, utilizing a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens. I employed an ultra-fast shutter speed to eliminate any camera shake, cleanly freezing the rapid, shifting motion of the crane's feathers in razor-sharp detail.
