The Story: This tranquil, square-format wildlife photograph captures a beautiful Sandhill Crane meticulously searching for food while completely enveloped by a sea of tall, golden reeds at Farmington Bay. Standing quietly in the marshland, I watched as the crane’s elegant silhouette seamlessly blended into its surroundings, highlighted by the soft, warm colors of the autumn landscape. The Technique: Captured without a tripod by quietly leaning my shoulder against a telephone pole to brace my body and eliminate hand shake. Using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens, this improvised stabilization technique allowed me to keep the foraging crane in sharp focus while throwing the dense, surrounding golden foliage into a beautifully soft background tapestry.
