The Story: This powerful wildlife photograph captures a majestic Sandhill Crane soaring across the sky, its powerful flight muscles fully visible as it answers a deep, trumpeting call to join a companion near the Farmington Bay mudflats. Out of a high-speed series of shots taken that day, this was the single frame that successfully excluded the modern residential housing developments of local urban sprawl encroaching on the marsh. The Technique: Captured handheld for immediate tracking flexibility using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens. To sharply document the crane's complex muscle definition and large wingspan as it rapidly crossed the sky, I utilized an ultra-fast shutter speed and a precise continuous autofocus tracking system to eliminate any hand movement or tracking blur.
