About the Artwork
The Story: This mesmerizing panoramic wildlife photograph captures a flock of Red-Necked Phalaropes as they glide in for a landing, their delicate forms and reflections appearing to dance across the pale blue waters of the Great Salt Lake. To document these tiny shorebirds from a low, stable vantage point near the Antelope Island Causeway, I navigated a challenging descent through massive shoreline rocks, thick sagebrush, swarming bugs, and potential snakes. As a wildlife conservation photographer, capturing these flocks highlights the lake's vital role as an irreplaceable hemispheric staging ground where phalaropes gather in staggering numbers to feast on brine shrimp and flies to power their grueling migration to South America. The Technique: Captured from a low, rocky shoreline position using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens mounted on a stable tripod with a fluid gimbal head, using a fast shutter speed to sharply preserve the birds' synchronized wings and sharp reflections on the glistening morning water.
