The Story: Discovered during a walk through the outdoor collections at Red Butte Garden in Salt Lake City, Utah, this emerging Red Hibiscus bud (Hibiscus) immediately drew me in for a closer look. There is a beautiful sense of anticipation in a flower that is just starting to open. The vibrant crimson edges of the unfolding petals create a stunning, natural contrast against the deep green leaves, showcasing a perfect example of nature’s complementary colors in the summer sun.
The Technique: Shot out in the field using a high-resolution Nikon camera and a specialized macro lens, this digital photograph focuses heavily on texture. The precise, tight composition captures the delicate ribs of the green sepals and the velvety surface of the emerging red petals, transforming a single bud into an elegant, structural study of a spring awakening.
