The Story: While exploring the enchanting trails of Lotusland Botanical Garden in Montecito, California, I discovered these delicate purple Skullcap flowers (Scutellaria). To truly capture their ethereal presence, I sat down low to the earth, aligning my camera lens right at the flowers' level. This low-angle perspective allowed me to frame the slender violet blossoms against the spectacular "bokeh" of the background—where the bright California sun breaks through the dense garden canopy, fracturing the daylight into a shimmering field of soft, circular light discs.
The Technique: Shot out in the field using a high-resolution Nikon camera and a specialized macro lens, this digital photograph relies on a shallow depth of field. By sharply focusing on the foremost purple blossoms, the lens naturally dissolves the background foliage into a dreamlike, painterly wash of light and color, accentuating the delicate, organic architecture of the small flora.
