About the Artwork
The Story: This captivating wildlife photograph captures Double-crested Cormorants perched atop the weathered pilings of a historic, decaying pier where the Florida shoreline meets the Atlantic Ocean at The Barnacle Historic State Park. Lying completely prone on the ground to align my camera directly with the eye level of the birds, I completed this memorable session while repeatedly dodging an enthusiastic local dog who kept diving into the surf and returning to shake water all over me. As a wildlife nature conservation photographer, applying a soft, painterly glow to the final image transforms this coastal encounter into an ethereal archive of the resilient seabirds that utilize our protected historic maritime environments. The Technique: Captured handheld from a low, prone ground perspective using a high-resolution Nikon D780 camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens, using a quick shutter speed to eliminate any movement from the coastal breeze or the nearby splashing dog while using creative post-processing to infuse the marine scene with a soft, dreamy backlight.
