Great Salt Lake Utah Wildlife Print | Mule Deer on Antelope Island, Early Light
About the Artwork
The Story: This evocative wildlife photograph captures two magnificent mule deer bucks rising for the day in the frosty, early morning light of a brisk 10-degree January day on Antelope Island. Utilizing a specialized post-processing technique, I subdued the ambient morning light to a near-monochromatic palette, beautifully isolating the natural warmth of the bucks and the winter plant life in front of a soft-focused fence line. As a wildlife conservation photographer, documenting these large native herbivores traversing the island's cold winter ranges highlights the resilience of the non-avian mammal populations thriving within the Great Salt Lake basin. Explore this and other conservation-focused wildlife images across my online [Shop Wildlife Collection].
The Technique: Captured handheld in the biting 10-degree cold for maximum tactical speed using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens. Anticipating that the encounter would be incredibly fleeting, I bypassed my tripod setup to instantly capture the bucks just a single second before they gracefully jumped the fence line and vanished into the winter brush.
