About the Artwork
The Story: This surreal monochromatic landscape photograph captures the intense morning backlight breaking through the dense, needle-covered branches of the Cholla Cactus Garden in Joshua Tree National Park. Dropping into a low squat as the early dawn sun pierced a layer of low-hanging clouds, I framed the scene to let the otherworldly plants shift dynamically in and out of a selective focus. As a wilderness visual artist, translating this high-desert environment into a high-contrast black and white format emphasizes the stark, architectural lines and striking structural defenses that define these protected desert ecosystems. The Technique: Captured from a low, ground-level squat using a reliable Nikon D3400 camera body and a specialized wide-angle lens mounted on a stable tripod, utilizing a wide aperture to intentionally soften the immediate foreground while letting the intense morning backlight transform the cactus needles into high-contrast silver silhouettes.
