The Story: This intimate wildlife portrait captures a dedicated female hummingbird sitting patiently atop her carefully hidden nest, nestled deep within the lush green branches of a Salt Lake City tree canopy. Photographed responsibly from behind a friend's house window to maintain a strictly non-intrusive distance, this frame marks the beginning of an incredible backyard conservation journey where I followed this mother from incubation until her young chick successfully fledged. The Technique: Captured from behind a protective window pane using a high-resolution Nikon D780 camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens securely mounted on a stable tripod with a fluid gimbal head, using precise manual focus to slice past the window glass and lock tack-sharp clarity onto the nesting mother bird.
