The Story: This serene wildlife photograph captures a majestic Great Egret preening its feathers in the soft golden light of a quiet morning at Farmington Bay. To preserve the timeless, tranquil beauty of the scene, I completely altered the background to remove a newly constructed high school whose bright modern colors encroached on this fragile avian sanctuary. As a wildlife conservation photographer, documenting these elegant birds is increasingly vital as urban sprawl rapidly develops the boundaries around the Great Salt Lake, causing a noticeable decline in local egret sightings. The Technique: Captured from a low position sitting on the ground across a section of water using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens mounted on a stable tripod. I utilized a tack-sharp focus on the bird's feathers while using post-processing techniques to clean and soften the distracting urban background into a beautifully abstract, natural backdrop.
