The Story: This exhilarating wildlife photograph captures a majestic Great Blue Heron just as it begins to lift off into flight over the pristine waters of Weber Bay during a May exploration expedition. These grand shorebirds are incredibly versatile predators that thrive in both freshwater and saltwater delta habitats, establishing active breeding colonies close to their primary feeding grounds. As a wildlife conservation photographer, documenting these birds on the open water highlights the vital importance of the Great Salt Lake's varied bays for migratory survival and nesting success. The Technique: Captured handheld from a moving airboat using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor lens. To safely navigate the speed of the watercraft, I kept my camera locked into a specialized body harness system, utilizing an ultra-fast shutter speed to perfectly freeze the heron's powerful wing extension and the brilliant morning light reflecting off the bay.
