About the Artwork
The Story: This powerful wildlife photograph captures a tight, close-up look at a Great Blue Heron with its massive wings fully extended, scrambling across the frozen ice of Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area on a frigid winter morning. Because of the slippery surface, the heron had to awkwardly sprint across the ice sheets to build enough momentum and traction to safely lift off into the freezing air. As a wildlife conservation photographer, documenting these intense, cold-weather moments highlights the resilience of the grand avian species that make Utah's winter wetlands their home. The Technique: Captured using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor lens locked onto a stable tripod. To counteract the bright, blinding glare of the ice sheets under the winter sky, I utilized a precise exposure balance paired with a high shutter speed to cleanly freeze the heron's frantic muscle movement and wings in razor-sharp detail.
