About the Artwork
The Story: Sunflowers are traditional symbols of open fields and warm summer sun, but freezing one in water completely redefines its visual identity. Created in Utah, I fully submerged this sunflower (Helianthus) in water and froze it solid for 24 hours. The intense pressure of the freezing process warped the vivid yellow petals, creating a stunning visual tension as if the blossom is breaking through a deep, icy blue abyss. It transforms a familiar backyard favorite into a dramatic, high-contrast abstract statement.
The Technique: Shot in my studio using a high-resolution Nikon camera and a specialized macro lens, this digital photograph captures an incredible level of structural detail. The close-up composition isolates the intricate center of the sunflower and the radiating golden petals, using the deep blue background water tones to make the yellow pigments pop with crisp, electric clarity.
