About the Artwork
The Story: There is a gentle, quiet magic to the early hours of the day, and this piece captures that exact sensation through a frozen lens. Created in Utah, I fully immersed a classic pairing of red and yellow roses (Rosa) in water, freezing them solid for a full 24-hour cycle. The freezing process locked the warm, blending petals into a crystalline state. Looking closely at the finished fine art photograph, the ice creates a soft, dewy texture that beautifully mimics the fresh, crisp atmosphere of a backyard garden at dawn, evoking a deep sense of peaceful optimism.
The Technique: Shot in my studio using a high-resolution Nikon camera and a specialized macro lens, this digital photograph is a detailed study of warmth encased in frost. The close-up composition highlights the delicate, overlapping layers of the petals, using the translucent ice and trapped oxygen bubbles to softly diffuse the light and blend the rich crimson and bright yellow pigments into a smooth, painterly gradient.
