The Story: Certain flowers hold the power to act as immediate time capsules. For me, the ruffled elegance of a pink carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus) instantly carries me back to my high school days along the Wasatch Front, evoking the excitement of being handed a delicate boutonniere or corsage before a formal dance. By freezing this nostalgic blossom in time, this fine art photograph serves as a visual preservation of youth, memory, and mid-century romance.
The Technique: Captured using a high-resolution Nikon camera and a specialized macro lens, this digital photograph captures a fleeting moment of beauty. The flower was fully submerged in water and frozen solid, requiring me to work with immense speed in the studio to document the crisp, icy fractures before they melted away, leaving the layered pink ruffles suspended in a crystalline state.
