The Story: This dynamic wildlife photograph captures a majestic Great Blue Heron soaring gracefully over the vast marshlands of Water Conservation Area 3 inside Everglades National Park. Documenting this massive wading bird in mid-flight from a moving watercraft required split-second stabilization to lock onto its expansive wingspan as it glided across the open marsh. The Technique: Captured handheld from a moving airboat using a high-resolution Nikon D780 camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens. To combat the vibrations of the watercraft engine and the physical weight of the telephoto setup, I utilized an ultra-fast shutter speed to eliminate tracking movement and cleanly freeze the crisp patterns of the heron's flight feathers.
