The Story: This extraordinary panoramic wildlife photograph captures a massive, diverse congregation of Bald Eagles, Great Blue Herons, gulls, small hawks, and American White Pelicans sliding in for winter landings at the Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area in January 2019. Shot quietly from my vehicle to avoid disturbing the flock, this incredible gathering stands as a rare historical archive of a thriving ecosystem that has since vanished due to rapid environmental shifts. As a wildlife conservation photographer, this frame serves as a powerful visual testament to how drastically the Great Salt Lake's wetland habitats are changing and why their preservation is so urgent. The Technique: Captured from inside a vehicle using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens resting securely on the car door frame for maximum stability. This mobile blind technique allowed me to maintain absolute steadiness without startling the hundreds of birds, utilizing a fast shutter speed to sharply preserve the layered action of birds standing, landing, and soaring across the cold January sky.
