Great Salt Lake Utah Wildlife Print | Eared Grebes, Love
About the Artwork
The Story: This exquisite wildlife photograph captures a pair of Eared Grebes standing upright and facing each other on the glistening morning waters near the Antelope Island Causeway, frozen mid-frame during an intimate segment of their famous mating "dance." To capture this elusive behavior from a safe distance without disrupting the birds, I scrambled through rugged sagebrush and large shoreline rocks to establish a low, motionless vantage point on the water's edge. As a wildlife conservation photographer, documenting these colonial breeding rituals underscores how vital the shallow, food-rich bays of the Great Salt Lake are for sustaining generational shorebird populations. Explore this and other conservation-focused avian images across my online [Shop Birds of a Feather].
The Technique: Captured from a low, rocky shoreline position using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens mounted on a stable tripod with a fluid gimbal head, using a precise spot exposure to retain fine feather textures while tracking the birds against the high-contrast glare of the shimmering water.
