The Story: This intimate wildlife photograph captures a pair of Eared Grebes positioned bill-to-bill at the very beginning of their courtship ritual, enveloped in a magical backdrop of sparkling bokeh morning light. Tucked in tight along the rocky shores of Antelope Island, I documented this quiet connection as the birds prepared to initiate their famous belly to belly breeding stance. As a wildlife conservation photographer, capturing this moment highlights the immense ecological value of the Great Salt Lake, which serves as a vital staging ground where nearly the entire global population of Eared Grebes gathers each fall to fatten up on brine shrimp before migrating south. The Technique: Captured from a concealed shoreline position using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens mounted on a stable tripod with a fluid gimbal head, utilizing a wide aperture to throw the distant water ripples into a dreamy, shimmering bokeh effect while keeping the birds' distinct red eyes and thin bills in sharp focus.
