The Story: This spectacular wildlife photograph captures a pair of Bald Eagles locked in a dramatic aerial mating dance over the shores of the Antelope Island Causeway, with a scattering of feeding Northern Shovelers visible in the background landscape. After swooping and diving in perfect unison across the morning sky, the eagles suddenly clasped their talons mid-air and spiraled downward, crashing and sliding onto the frozen ice below before safely taking flight again to continue their courtship. As a wildlife conservation photographer, capturing this intense, high-stakes breeding ritual showcases the raw wildness of the Great Salt Lake's ecosystem and the absolute necessity of preserving these vital shorelines for our nation’s apex raptors. The Technique: Captured from a stationary position using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens mounted on a stable tripod with a fluid gimbal head. To isolate the fast-moving eagles across a massive expanse of open sky and water, I utilized an ultra-fast shutter speed to eliminate tracking blur, paired with a tight digital crop to maximize the intricate details of the locked talons and extended wings.
