Death Valley National Park Photography Print | Cracks in Sand

$250.00

About the Artwork

  • The Story: This captivating landscape photograph captures the intricate, geometric mosaic of dried mud cracks baking in a deep gully between the towering Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes. Wandering through the shifting desert hills under a threatening sky while scanning the horizon to track the location of my vehicle, I sat flat on the ground to frame the precise moment the storm clouds parted in the distance. As a conservation-minded nature photographer, documenting these fragile mud tiles—formed when rare flash flood runoffs deposit fine sediment into the low basins before rapidly desiccating under the intense sun—highlights the extreme weather cycles that continuously sculpt Death Valley National Park. Explore this and other graphic, textural views across my online [Shop National Park Collection].

  • The Technique: Captured from a low, ground-level seated position using a high-resolution Nikon D780 camera and a 28-300mm Nikkor zoom lens securely mounted on a stable tripod. Despite sitting low to minimize my profile against the howling desert wind, utilizing a rock-steady tripod was absolutely essential to eliminate camera shake under the blustery sky, allowing a sharp depth of field to resolve the deep, fractured contours of the clay textures.
