The Story: This extraordinary landscape photograph captures a vibrant, luminous rainbow arching gracefully over the vast desert floor of Death Valley National Park beneath a dramatic blanket of deepening storm clouds. Navigating the park's roadways while actively monitoring the horizon to avoid dangerous seasonal flash floods, I rounded a corner and was met with the breathtaking sight of the rainbow making a perfect, illuminated touchdown on the valley floor. As a conservation photographer dedicated to archiving our wild public lands, documenting this fleeting atmospheric phenomenon highlights the rare, transformative rain cycles that bring life and sudden, unmatched beauty to North America's lowest desert basin. The Technique: Captured handheld for immediate deployment using a high-resolution Nikon D780 camera and a 28-300mm Nikkor zoom lens. Jumping out of my vehicle to secure the frame before the fleeting touchdown could dissipate, I bypassed my tripod setup entirely and relied on a fast shutter speed to sharply preserve the brilliant spectrum of light against the fast-moving desert storm clouds.
