About the Artwork
The Story: This mesmerizing panoramic landscape photograph captures an abstracted, fluid perspective of the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley National Park as a palpable, heavy desert wind whips across the ridge lines. Climbing high along the shifting terrain, the sheer velocity of the gale blurred the boundary between light and shadow, carving out sharp geometric slopes that simultaneously softened into delicate, minimalist waves. As a wilderness visual artist, exploring the boundary between documentary realism and emotional abstraction allows me to archive the raw, shifting shapes of our protected public lands while evoking a deep sense of environmental contemplation. The Technique: Captured on location using a high-resolution Nikon D780 camera and a 28-300mm Nikkor zoom lens, adapting to the harsh wind by employing a precise, mid-range depth of field to isolate the sharp crests of the sand ridges while allowing the wind-swept textures to dissolve into soft, painterly contours.
