Death Valley National Park Photography Print | Mesquite Sand Dunes, Leading Lines
About the Artwork
The Story: This powerful vertical landscape photograph highlights weathered, leafless mesquite trunks emerging from the sweeping ripples of the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes beneath a darkening purple storm sky. Seated flat on the ground to escape the fierce, biting gale, I framed the composition around the natural leading lines of the fallen log to guide the eye from the desert floor up through the twisted branches toward the wind-blown horizon. As a wilderness visual artist, documenting these resilient creosote bushes and mesquite trees captures a profound story of survival, showcasing how native flora constantly alters its growth to avoid being completely buried by shifting dunes. Explore this and other atmospheric, storm-swept vistas across my online [Shop National Park Collection].
The Technique: Captured from a low, ground-level seated position using a high-resolution Nikon D780 camera and a 28-300mm Nikkor zoom lens, tracking the strong architectural leading lines of the wood grain before quickly sheltering the camera body to protect its fragile mechanics from the whipping desert sand.
