The Story: This atmospheric landscape photograph captures the wind-blown expanses of the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley National Park, as deepening storm clouds loom ominously overhead. Facing a fierce, howling November gale that filled the cooling desert air with swirling sand particles, I captured the shifting contours of the 100-foot-tall peaks anchored by vibrant creosote bushes in the foreground. As a wilderness visual artist, documenting these tempestuous weather systems highlights the dynamic, raw elements that continuously reshape the fragile and protected terrains of America's desert parks. The Technique: Captured from a low, ground-level squat using a high-resolution Nikon D780 camera and a 28-300mm Nikkor zoom lens stabilized on a steady tripod, utilizing a fast shutter speed to freeze the airborne sand particles before sheltering the camera body beneath my jacket to protect the glass and mechanics from the abrasive wind.
