Death Valley National Park Photography Print | Badwater Basin
About the Artwork
The Story: This captivating landscape photograph captures the textured, repeating geometric salt polygons cutting across the surreal expanse of Badwater Basin in Death Valley National Park. Lying flat in a prone position directly on the salt-encrusted floor—the lowest point in North America at 282 feet below sea level—I framed this low-angle perspective to emphasize the vast, otherworldly scale of this ancient, evaporated lakebed. As a conservation-minded nature photographer, documenting these fragile mineral crusts highlights the delicate hydrologic cycles of groundwater upwelling and rapid desert evaporation that continuously sculpt this extreme protected environment. Explore this and other immersive, high-texture desert views across my online [Shop National Park Collection].
The Technique: Captured on location using a high-resolution Nikon D780 camera and a 28-300mm Nikkor zoom lens mounted on a tripod with fully splayed legs. This low-profile prone setup allowed me to maintain absolute structural stability against the blustery November wind while utilizing a deep depth of field to sharply resolve the coarse, crystalline ridges of the foreground salt polygons.
