Great Salt Lake Utah Wildlife Print | Cliff Swallows

$400.00

About the Artwork

  • The Story: This intimate wildlife photograph captures a group of Cliff Swallows gathering mud pellets along a muddy shore at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge to construct their intricate, gourd-shaped nests beneath a nearby bridge. To look eye-to-eye with these tiny, industrious architects, I lay completely prone on the gravel to document them loading their bills with the wet earth they will vigorously mold into place. As a wildlife conservation photographer, capturing these nesting behaviors highlights how deeply these colonies rely on a delicate combination of nearby shallow water resources and accessible mudbanks to shape the 900 to 1,200 individual pellets needed for a single home. Explore this and other conservation-focused bird images across my online [Shop Birds of a Feather].

  • The Technique: Captured while lying prone on a gravel road using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens mounted on a tripod’s gimbal head with fully splayed legs. This low-profile ground perspective allowed me to maintain absolute stability while utilizing a wide aperture to isolate the fine feather details of the swallows against a beautifully softened body of water.
