Great Salt Lake Utah Wildlife Print | Great Blue Heron, Breaking the Ice
About the Artwork
The Story: This striking black and white wildlife photograph captures a Great Blue Heron methodically piercing through frozen ice sheets in search of food at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge. Captured on a bitterly cold winter morning, the monochromatic format emphasizes the stark, quiet isolation and intense struggle for survival faced by Utah's wintering avian species. As a wildlife conservation photographer, documenting these grueling hunting behaviors shows the absolute necessity of protecting these vital water resources, even when frozen over. Explore this and other conservation-focused bird images across my online [Shop Birds of a Feather].
The Technique: Captured in the freezing elements using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor lens secured on a steady tripod. To maximize the impact of the black and white conversion, I utilized a precise exposure to emphasize the deep tonal contrast between the heron's dark plumage and the bright, shattered crystalline textures of the reflecting ice.
