Great Salt Lake Utah Wildlife Print | Great Blue Heron, Nest Building
About the Artwork
The Story: This striking color photograph captures a rare, almost abstract look at a Great Blue Heron couple building their nest directly on the ground within the marsh reeds of Farmington Bay. Because the main communal rookeries at the bay were completely full, these herons were forced to resort to ground nesting, a desperate behavior that leaves their eggs dangerously exposed to land predators. As a wildlife conservation photographer, documenting these unusual nesting adaptations serves as a powerful visual warning about the critical shortage of safe habitat available to our migratory birds. Explore this and other conservation-focused avian images across my online [Shop Birds of a Feather].
The Technique: Captured using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor lens secured on a stable tripod. To emphasize the abstract quality of the scene, I utilized a precise depth of field that keeps the herons and their immediate reed nest sharp while softly blurring the surrounding marsh textures into a tapestry of natural color.
