Great Salt Lake Utah Wildlife Print | Bison Roundup, Crack the Whip
About the Artwork
The Story: This action-packed wildlife photograph captures the thrilling intensity of the annual October bison roundup on Antelope Island, showing a massive herd surging through tall, golden grasses while guided by skilled horseback cowhands. Part of a dedicated three-year documentary series on the island, this frame freezes a precise split-second moment as a cowboy cracks a whip mid-air to drive the 700 free-roaming animals toward their seasonal health evaluations. As a wildlife conservation photographer, documenting this historic gathering highlights the crucial veterinary care and population management required to maintain a healthy, sustainable herd within Utah's protected rangeland ecosystems. The Technique: Captured from a designated spectator zone using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens mounted on a stable tripod with a fluid gimbal head, carefully poking the barrel through an opening in the fence line. I utilized an ultra-fast shutter speed to eliminate tracking motion, cleanly freezing both the speeding horseback riders and the rapid snap of the whip against the dust and golden autumn fields.
