The Story: This powerful panoramic photograph captures a free-roaming herd of bison traveling along a distant ridgeline on Antelope Island, set against the breathtaking, snow-packed peaks of the Wasatch Mountain Range. Introduced over a century ago to replace early cattle-ranching operations, this historic herd of roughly 700 head roams freely across the island's expansive, wild rangelands. As a wildlife conservation photographer, documenting these massive historical grazers traversing the ridges highlights the enduring, untamed spirit of Utah's protected island ecosystems within the Great Salt Lake basin. The Technique: Captured from a stable vantage point using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens mounted on a tripod with a fluid gimbal head, utilizing the optical compression of the telephoto lens to dramatically pull the distant, snow-covered mountains closer to the dark silhouettes of the bison herd.
