Original Oil Painting | Beloved, Mary Magdalene and Christ
About the Artwork
The Story:
The sweet, spicy fragrance grew stronger,
Leading me to the central pillar of the Mountain Temple,
The pillar called The Tree,
And it was a tree, a huge tree Rooted deep in earth, starts in its branches,
And its great trunk grew around a wound
A hollow that held his suffering body,
Not in a coffin, but fixed to the start, dead tree
Of my terrible visions….
“Beloved!” my voice rang above the mountain.
“This is my Beloved!”
Inspired and quoted from Passion of Mary Magdalen,
by Elizabeth Cunningham.
Working from models, I painted the image of Christ in the wound of a tree, with the wound on his body symbolizing the cuts he received while on the cross. I have painted Mary Magdalen with red hair to symbolize possible Celtic connections. She is wearing a red sarong to represent feminine qualities dating back to Paleolithic times when human remains were heavily painted with red ocher. Red ocher was used as a ritual substitute for blood, hence as a symbol of life and birth. Ocher had a special association with the blood of women that symbolized the power of regeneration.
In addition, the headdress Mary is wearing is similar to what the Goddess Isis would have worn thereby making a connection of various mythological storylines of Mary and Jesus being compared to Isis and Osiris. The Goddess Hathor also is often shown wearing a similar headdress, on which the round disk is cradled between cow horns. Furthermore, creating even more connections, Cleopatra often dressed for ceremonial occasions in Hathor’s headdress. The serpent on Mary’s arm makes a connection to rebirth and transformation as well as a connection back to Cleopatra and Eve. Shop Fine Art Painting Collection
