The Story: This captivating wildlife photograph captures a pair of American White Pelicans standing together during a blustery, 50 mph wind storm along the shores of the Farmington Bay. The intense gale is visibly documented in the frame, showing the pelicans' feathers blowing wildly in the wind as they swim close together, appearing to share a quiet conversation amid the elements. The Technique: Captured without a tripod—which was repeatedly blown over by the 50 mph gusts—by sitting in a deep, tight squat with my high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens stabilized firmly between my knees to prevent camera shake. I utilized an ultra-fast shutter speed to eliminate wind motion and cleanly freeze the fine, blowing textures of the pelicans' wind-whipped plumage.
